Thursday Night Comfort Food

Thursday nights are generally a night for my friends and I to go cut loose, so I needed something simple and tasty for dinner.

I opted for a recipe I found on Recipezaar: Buffalo Tofu Sandwiches.

Okay, so I kind of "crowded" the mushrooms, but they turned out all right. I also ended up cutting off part of the tofu and using it for the "blue cheese" dressing and then cutting the remainder into three slices, which turned the serving size into 3, instead of 2.

Since the recipe suggested using blue cheese dressing, I looked up a vegan recipe for it here. It made WAY too much. And to be honest, I am not sure that it actually tasted like blue cheese dressing. It's hard to say though, as I'm not sure the last time I actually had blue cheese. Oh well. It was still pretty good.

I do have one suggestion for improving this meal, and that would be to marinate the tofu beforehand. Perhaps in the buffalo sauce (I used Frank's Red Hot). I don't really like spicy food, but this was not spicy AT ALL. It needed a little bit more spunk.

Until next time. :)

Ice cream... no wait... I scream... and then you scream?

Finding a delicious vegan ice scream... oh damn it... ice cream is a giant pain in the ass. No more Peanut Buster Parfaits from Dairy Queen or Frosties from Wendy's, but fear not! You will not be without delicious frozen sex. I mean ice cream.

So let's countdown the best vegan ice creams I've had in the past year:

5. Coconut ice cream. This doesn't get a picture. You know why? Because I have no idea where you would buy it in a store. They serve this lovely treat at Pad Thai, which has locations in Fairlawn and Hudson. It's freaking expensive for what you get ($4 for a teeny weeny bowl), but whatevs. It is a nice complement to one of their awesome vegan entrees. However, let's be honest: it is frozen coconut milk, not ice cream

4. Rice Dream Frozen Dessert

Okay, so on a scale of 1-to-awesome this is probably only a 4. It is so... ricey. Maybe it's because I only had the vanilla. This is good, and relatively cheap, but not quite up to par with the following vegan ice cream alternatives.

3. Tofutti Frozen Dessert

Now we're getting somewhere! Tofutti knows their shit, there is no doubt about that. It's reasonably priced and pretty damn close to real ice cream if you ask me.

2. It's Soy Delicious

Soy Delicious is kind of exactly the same as Tofutti. In fact, it really is a tie between the two, although I think Tofutti is a little cheaper. :)

And now the next one is soooooooooooooooo far away from the rest of the pack that I ought to make you scroll down all the way to the bottom of the page to see it. But I won't.

1. Tempt Frozen Dessert

ZOMG What?? That is not ice cream? I DO NOT BELIEVE! This is literally identical to real ice cream, minus the pus, pain, and poop of its moo cow counterpart. Did I stutter? If you haven't tried this yet, don't. Because you will not be able to stop eating it. It takes a little longer to defrost to scooping temperature than regular ice cream. I usually just throw it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds. My boyfriend says that causes crystals to form once it's refrozen. I don't care, it would still taste as good as Jesus. Yeah, I said it.

So there you have it, heavenly frozen bliss is possible. Get it.

Say Cheese!

This is my first post, and as such I feel like I should address the very first reason that people give me for why they could never be vegan: cheese.

Living in Akron, OH, my vegan "cheese" selection is somewhat limited. However, there are still a few brands that I have tried. For the sake of simplicity I am just going to compare mozzarella style cheeses, because this comprises the bulk of what I've tried.

The first is Vegan Gourmet by Follow Your Heart

This stuff is pretty slimy, and despite the claims on the packaging, I really haven't had much luck getting it to melt properly. If you can get past the slimy part, it does taste similar to mozzarella cheese.

The next is Vegan Mozzarella Flavor by Galaxy Foods. And yeah, this is a picture of Cheddar flavor because I'm fairly certain no other pictures exist:

I suppose part of the reason no other pictures exist is because the cheese itself is identical to Vegan Gourmet. The taste, texture, and melting capabilities are exactly the same. The price is also the same, so I would say it honestly doesn't matter which one you buy. The only advantage to Vegan vs. Vegan Gourmet is that Vegan comes in individually wrapped slices as well.

The final cheese that I have recently come into contact with is The Original Almond Mozzarella Style by Lisanatti:

This cheese is firm like real cheese, tastes like real cheese and I actually WANT to eat it by itself. I don't know about the melting qualities, but the price is comparable per ounce to Vegan and Vegan Gourmet. It also comes in several other flavors, if you are so inclined.

Now I just need to figure out what to talk about next...
